Ashen has received an offer to write a song for an upcoming Dutch Horror movie. It will be the title song for the movie “The Fading Horizon”. The Movie is directed by Ranil Gort and produced by Dark Reaper Film Productions. The movie will be made by volunteers. The recording of the trailer will take place in February. The movie will be released next year. It will also be shown at The Dutch Film Festival.

Band Biography 
The band started in August 2004. Their first gig was in January 2005. The band had a good start to gain more shows in and outside their hometown.
By now, they got to share the stage with bands like: Autumn, Trisomy, Annatar and Morning, which will probably sound familiar to the ears of many people. Two of the most important gigs were the finals of Noord Hollands Glorie and the prestigious Popprijs 2006 awards were they were awarded the first prize.
In October 2006 the band released their first Demo CD. At the moment Ashen is recording a full album witch will contain 11 songs. It will be finished at the end of this year. Next to recording the band has also been busy with writing a song for the Dutch horror movie "The Fading Horizon". The movie will be shown at the Dutch Movie Festival in 2008.
Their music is best described as "Melodic Gothic Metal" with its many melodic keyboard lines, the classical singing of Melanie, grunts, heavy and dynamic drums, earthshaking bassguitar riffs, and heavy melodic guitar lines.
Inspired by bands like After Forever, Nightwish and Cradle of Filth, the band created their own sound through the diversity in their shows, which is, next to a powerfull wall of classical underlined guitarviolence, a strong visual appearance in which frontwoman Melanie forms a striking center of the confident, energic band.

Band Biography
De band is begonnen in augustus 2004. Het eerste optreden was in januari 2005. Hierbij kregen ze een goede start om meer op te treden binnen en buiten Den Helder. Ook hebben ze het podium mogen delen met bands als; Autumn, Trisomy, Annatar en Morning, die bij veel mensen bekend in de oren zal klinken.
Een van de belangrijkste optredens niet te vergeten was de Finale van Noord Hollands Glorie en het Ongekend Talent Festival 2006. Gestreden tegen 20 anderen act's heeft Ashen de Helderse Pop Prijs 2006 gewonnen.
In oktober 2006 heeft Ashen hun eerste Demo CD uitgegeven. Momenteel is de band bezig met het opnemen van een album die 11 nummer bevat. Deze zal naar verwachting eind dit jaar klaar zijn. Hiernaast heeft Ashen ook een titelsong geschreven voor een Nederlandse Horrorfilm, genaamd; The Fading Horizon. Deze zal in 2008 o.a. op het Nederlands Film Festival te zien zijn.
De muziek van Ashen is te beschrijven als Melodische Gothic Metal. Veel melodische toetsenpartijen, dynamische drumpartijen, stevige baslijnen die de melodische en doordringende gitaar riffs ondersteunen. En de niet ontbrekende klassieke zang van de zangeres.
Geïnspireerd door bands als o.a After Forever, Nightwish en Cradle Of Filth heeft de band hun eigen geluid gecreëerd door de vele contrasten die hun show bevat, en deze is, behalve een muur van klassiek onderbouwd gitaargeweld, een sterk visueel geheel waarbij frontvrouw Melanie een zelfverzekerd en opvallend middelpunt vormt.

My tale starts in the year 2002. I discovered my voice in a karaoke bar. I started singing for the fun of it. Not long after that, a dutch gothic band called Within Temptation came in the spotlights on TMF. I had been entirely enchanted by that music. From that moment on I only sang that type of music. Not long after that, I was asked to sing in a band. How could i refuse? Sadly we had a lot of band problems and we decided to start al over again. We looked for new band members, took a new name and sound. From then on I discovered bands such as Nightwish and After Forever. They became my favorite. They really are my inspiration and motivation to go on in hard times. You can hear their sound in our music today. We started with Ashen in august 2004 and everything gone very fast for me. I decided to take singing lessons. Some times are hard but we keep moving forward.
Everything has gone very fast, and I still can't believe it! I'm very happy with how it’s going these days. And I especially love the fans we have!

years ago, somewhere in 1999, a good friend learned me the first basic skills of guitar playing. I improved those skills by playing as much as I could.
My first band experience came in 2000. It was some kind of punk/metal band witch I founded with a bass guitarist. It was fun, but, it was not my style of music to express myself in. I decided to start a band on my own. Black Illusions became the name of the band. Together with 4 other musicians, including a female vocalist, we were able to play more Gothic-like music. That was more like it. I wrotea lot of lyrics and music. It was a way to express my feelings.
It lasted for about 2 years, when the band sort of broke up. After a long search for new members we finally gained 3 musicians in the late summer of 2004. It felt like a new beginning, and we decided that it was time for a new name. Ashen was born!
I feel that this band is a part of myself, of my live. I enjoy playing in this band and hope that we will grow and play much more. One thing that is also important, are the fans. I want to thank them all.

Originally, I’m a guitarist. I started playing when I was 14; a present from my father. Nine months later I started taking some lessons at the local Music school. I always hung out with three friends. I started playing the guitar with one of them and the others started on the bass. We taught each other stuff.
I’ve known the band Ashen for some years, from the time when they were still known as ‘Black Illusions’.
Around March 2007, I started talking with Melanie. I knew her from some gigs at that time. She told me they needed a new bass player because the current one had to leave the band due to his new job/education. So I offered my help, but I didn’t had a bass.
One month later, a buddy of mine was at Robert’s place and he told him that I love to play the guitar, and can play the bass a little too. So they invited me up to Robert’s place and we went to the rehearsal room that evening. A week after that, I loaned a bass from a friend and played some songs along.
Soon after that, I bought a bass guitar and we had our first performance. It all happened so fast!
Writing this, we’ve already had three gigs. We even had the opportunity to be Autumn’s support act at Alkmaar’s ‘Parkhof’.

I started playing the strings when I was 15. At that time I listened to a lot of rockmusic, bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica and Guns n’ Roses. Together with a buddy from school, who loved the same music, I decided to take some guitarlessons. All just for fun, hoping it would be possible to play some of the rockclassics on our own one day. Now, a lot of years later, I still play guitar with the same enthusiasm as I had during my first guitarlesson. Always trying to improve myself, always trying to get better.
Before I got into Ashen (former Black Illusions), I did some projects with other musicians. Mostly coversongs, nothing really serious though. I must say that I’m really happy to be a member of this band. Besides our serious efforts to write good, solid and heavy music, we have a lot of fun together, both off-stage and on stage.
The bands I mentioned before are still a great influence to me, even in my own songwritings. I also listen to a lot of bands in the Scandinavian metal-scene (Opeth, Children of Bodom, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Nightwish, Soilwork, Sentenced, Amorphis etc.), progressive rock/metal (Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation) and some classical, blues and pop music. Too many to mention to be honest.

I’m Robert and I play the strings in Ashen. I never played in a band or anything like it before. I play the keyboard for 6 years now, but my main-instrument is piano. I only played classical music on the piano and no pop or whatever it is. I do like heavy metal and the combination with classical instruments. So my inspiration of symphonic bands is: Cradle of Filth, Nightwish, Dimmu Borgir, After Forever etc. I have the feeling I am perfectly fit for Ashen. I like to hang with them and they give me inspiration to write allot of songs. I look up to my band members, and Ashen gives me the feelings that I’m in high-heaven. Music means allot to me, a day without music drives me insane. Also I’m very interested in the English language and I do write lyrics for songs. My goal in Ashen is to get as ‘high’ as possible as we can get. I’ve have the feeling that this is only the beginning and we’ll see what the future can bring us. Well, my story started about five long years ago, when I bought my first drumkit.
I began to take drumming lessons at the local centre of art and music (the Triade). The next 1,5 years I practiced and tried to master the basics of drumming. Then one day, I went to a local youth centre called ‘the Postbrug’ because of some kind of cultural trip throughout Den Helder which was organized by my school. It was there where I found out that playing together with other musicians feels absolutely fucking great. From that point forward I focused on playing in bands. A few months later I formed my first band with three of my best friends, which was named: ‘the majestic banana fluffies (from hell)’ I had a great time playing in that band, though unfortunately we fell apart after two years. After all that, I kept playing in all sorts of projects, I didn’t really have a standing band. Until one evening, I went out in town, got my self a couple of perensapjes just before I went to my favorite pub (De Engel). And there, sitting at a table was a black dressed gentleman who I recognized as a musician. We had a nice chat for a while. Then he asked me if I Was interested in playing together with His band, formerly known as black illusions. I was very enthusiastic and immediately responded with ‘jahman’. Ever since I’m very happy and proud to legally call myself ‘ de drummer van ashen’.
