If you were expecting a skinny puppy sounding album, you’re in for a shock.
This debut release from Skinny Puppy’s former lead vocalist, Nivek Ogre,
is far from anything he has ever done in the past. This album shows us a
new side to Ogre, not quit as dark as the mood all the skinny puppy albums
had. With the help of producer\programmer, Mark Walk, “Welt” has become one
the most enjoyable albums I have ever heard.
Originally scheduled to be released in 1995, on Rick Rubin’s “American Records”
label, it was permanently shelved due to a ton of legal problems and record
company horseshit. It wasn’t until 1999, when the re-record clause from the
“American Records” deal had expired, that Ogre and Mark were able to re-record
the album and release it on another label. (Spitfire Records)
With this album, Ogre pushes the boundaries of syth-pop and at the same time
opens the door to the uncharted world of electronic-rock music.
(Or electro-rock as I have come to call it) The problem with electro-rock is
that the end result usually winds up sounding like Stabbing Westward or Gravity
Kills, but Ogre has avoided this with his unique music writing abilities.
Like skinny puppy, Ohgr is not for everybody, and it is safe to say that some
Skinny Puppy fans will not like this album, but if you are into albums with
very diverse rhythms and uniquely structured songs, this is the album for you.
Songs like “Cracker” takes you back in time to the mid 80’s with its Duran
Duranish style bass lines, and will evoke many opinions with its anti-mainstream
message. A very well written song. (Cool video if you ever get the chance to
see it.) The first track “water” is my favourite song on the album. It’s truly
industrial with an array of unique sounds and powerful vocals. “Kettle” has
more of an electro rock feel but again has very unique sounds and samples in
it witch give it a flavour of its own. “Lusid” is a very fast paced synth-pop
song with some great guitar riffs. Now if close your eyes and listen to the
last song, “minus” you may forget that you’re listening to the “ohgr” album
and think that you’re listening to a new skinny puppy single. This by far is
the darkest song on the album and is pure hardcore industrial.
All and all, this is a great album, a totally unexpected style from the former
skinny puppy vocalist. If you’re into variety I suggest you pick up a copy.
This album will make you feel good and happy. On scale of 1-10 (10 being the
highest), I give this album an 8. It’s a great piece of work.
If you get the chance to see them live..The last time they toured cEvin Key
(former skinny puppy synth player \ programmer) was playing drums for most of
their dates.
It was like a little skinny puppy reunion. And of course as it was with skinny
puppy, very little is on DAT, most everything is preformed live, and with the
help of keyboard player “loki” and the visually stunning appearance, and rock
star like antics of bass player “Tim Skold”(formerly from shotgun messiah) and
of course “Ogre”, it was one of the best live shows of the year.
