The long awaited new single from Cosmicity. Apparently Mark has taken on a decidedly more techno / electronic direction, with
the vocals being the same bubbly synthpop sounding vocals, but the music is completely techno, but very happy sounding techno, sounds almost
like house music. Now, cosmicity has always been a favorite of mine, mainly because I love their bubbly synthpop sound. While some would say
that synthpop is "gay sounding" or "cheesy", what can I say, I love the cheesiness. hehe. Seriously though, there is a market for it out there and
a lot of people are into it. It's interesting how in the goth/industrial scene, at one point it was divided into goth music and industrial music, but
now it seems to be divided with ebm/ futurepop being the most popular, and cheesy synthpop on one end of the spectrum, and powernoise / harsh ebm
on the other side of the spectrum. Ofcourse there's still the die-hard goth fans, but they're all over 30 yrs old and are slowly fading out.
Back to the review, The Icon of Coil Remix is quite good, with a more ebm feel to it, yet still has the same poppy sound to it.
The "In Flight - Delobbo Remix" is actually really good as well.
This single actually seems to be a combination of singles for two songs - "In-Flight" , and "Abort".
The "Abort" track is different from any of Cosmicity's previous material, it sounds like a minimalistic techno track, with some
distorted robotic vocals in it. Sounds more like electroclash than synthpop to me.
"Abort is not very impressive, although the "DJ Ram" remix of the "Abort" track is actually pretty good, even though it sounds like a
totally new techno song with the "Abort" vocals thrown on top and would probably sound better without the vocals.
Overall, In-Flight is a good track, it's actually some of Cosmicity's best work to date. Cosmicity's song "alone", while one of their oldest songs,
is a club staple on thursday nights here at cybertron in nyc, and I often get requests for it. While "In-Flight" doesn't seem quite as catchy as
"Alone" , I think that the more electronic direction will broaden Cosmicity's appeal.
