SINCE MATERIALISING IN 2004, Deviant UK has established itself as a rapidly rising star of the European Dark Alternative scene. The band unleashed the long-awaited and frankly outstanding debut album 'Barbed Wire Star' in September 2006, spawning the anthemic club hits 'Raptured Saints' and 'Access Denied!'. Their sound is powerful, distinctive and instantly accessible - and one of the few on the scene known to appeal to both Gothic and EBM audiences. The band is in its element onstage, consolidating an ever-growing fanbase with spectacular live shows including the renowned Dark City, Black Celebration, Whitby and Infest festivals among others. Indeed, in August Deviant UK made a triumphant return to Infest 2008 - one of the few acts to be asked to play the festival for a second time - as 'easily the most requested UK act in the history of Infest'. Praise indeed. The band is masterminded by singer, songwriter and frontman - the devilish Jay Smith ("a true showman with an ego the size of a planet" - Rocksound Magazine). Offering an arsenal of contemporary programming, soaring synthesisers, industrial percussion loops and cold vocals that coat each track in a layer of black ice, Smith's idiosyncratic song writing is laden with wickedly commercial hooks and fist in the air choruses. Indeed, the wilful pop science seamlessly integrated into their industrial machinery is what makes Deviant UK stand out from their peers. Smith believes in the value of the 'rock star'. As such, the band is driven by a distinctive image and spectacular stage presentation commensurate with their music. Acknowledged to be a spectacular live act, their performance is crystallised by Smith - a consummate frontman who engages the audience head-on with a confidence that is equal parts outrageous arrogance, machiavellian charisma and absolute control freak. That said, the bravado sometimes gives way to reveal a frightening fragility that everyone of us can secretly identify with. With a malevolent stage presence, Deviant UK menace, compel and thrill you in equal toxic measures. In the current climate where manufactured pop is king, Deviant UK is a dark and intriguing alternative that delivers both musically and visually. Smith's incisive narratives paint pictures that ignite your imagination, leading you by the hand through a world of deviant sex, twisted romance, decadence and excess...all underpinned by a humour so black that it can only have come from having been there, seen it and done it. September 2008 saw the release of a collaboration with long-time hero Peter Spilles [Project Pitchfork] on his Imatem album 'Journey', featuring Jay's distinctive voice [on 'The Influence'] alongside other guest vocalists including Ronan Harris and Sven Friedrich. The album hit the number one spot on the all-important Deutsch Alternative Chart. Jay also provided soulful lead vocals to 'Mission', a stunning new Rotersand song released as part of their 'I Cry' EP which also topped the DAC, giving Jay the rare accolade of appearing on two number one hits in October 2008. With the 'Barbed Wire Star' album already hailed as a classic debut and continuing to appear in bestseller charts two years after its release, further European/US tour dates lie ahead. The second - and aptly titled - album 'Very Bad Things' is under way...the Deviant UK machine goes from strength to strength... strap yourselves in [a little too tightly] and enjoy the ride. With new anthems like 'My Black Heart', 'You Will Burn' & 'Bad Influence' already powerful highlights of the live set, Smith is once more raising the stakes with a sound that is bigger, harder & forward-looking. At the very forefront of the revitalised UK scene, who the hell would bet against Deviant UK now?
